1965 4.2 FHC, Engine OUT

Driving for my MOT, I realise the clutch is slipping badly. (only the first time it's been driven). It looks like the engine/gearbox will need to come out to replace/free the clutch.
The questions is while out.... because I don't want to do it too often. what else should I do as a matter of course.
A compression test shows them all fairly similair with one cylinder a bit high.
Oil pressure is consistent, but don't know what it should be?
Also, I just can't get the Temperature guage to read. Shorting the sensor wire to earth sees the needle move to hot. The sensors resistance reduces as the engine heats up. Replacing the sensor/meter wire makes no difference. The regulated voltage is solid at 10 volts. Is there a common fault with the meter reading the current, or the sensor's resistance beint too high?
Any help appreciated.
Regards
Keith
