I have a problem with exhaust drone inside the car, I had a big bore exhaust that I removed and replaced with a standard one but the noise still remains, it happens when I accelerate hard or I am going up a long hill, the noise in the car gives me a headache. Do all e types do this? I have never driven another one.

Exhaust Drone
John,
You don't say whether your car is a fixed or open top? I have a big bore sports exhaust with an open top car that does the same when I have the roof up.
Have fitted sound deadening inside the car? the tunnel is a good area to start. Have you got the exhaust front and rear heat shields fitted?

Hi Dave,
This is the second reply I have tried, the first was not posted.
I have a FHC with a webasto sunroof, when the roof is open the noise is not an issue, however I do not open it on motorways or fast roads due to wind noise.
I did not know that the exhaust should have heat sheilds, where are they fitted?

There should be a front exhaust heat shield fitted above the gearbox and is triangular in shape this stops heat and a certain amount of noise coming into the car via the tunnel.
The second heat shield is rectangular and is fitted directly to the floor via pop rivets or self tappers. It is situated under the two middle exhaust boxes.
The heat shields also stop a lot of the heat from the exhaust filtering into the car. They are often removed the original ones were asbestos sheet and many people who have restored cars don't realise they should even be on the car.
I think you have answered the question and that is whether the heat shields are fitted or not when the car is enclosed you will get a certain amount of boom coming into the cockpit the same as I do when I have my roof up.
If you need heat shields let me know I have a few st. st ones ones brand new that I make up.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply, I think the heat sheild issue is not helping the drone, however the more I read on the web the more I think it is down to the gas flow that is the cause. Everything has a point whereby it will vibrate and resonate, a bit like the finger round the rim of wine glass. by altering the speed of the gas flow or just by adding weight to the exhaust can by all accounts reduce the point at where the resonance starts.
I am going to try an contact a bepoke exhaust maker and see they can make up a binocular box and or tail pipes that can lower or get rid of the drone. I would like to hear from anybody with a FHC to see if they suffer with the same problem.
I will keep you posted on how I get on.
Many thanks for the offer of the heat sheilds

John,
My exhaust was made by E-type fabs they have since stopped making the exhausts and this is now done by classic fabs.
At the rear of the exhaust box ETF tacked in a venturi in each outlet to speed up the flow of gas exiting from the exhaust. This also has the effect of making the exhaust quieter which I didn't like so I removed them.
They are st. st. and sitting on the shelf in my garage so if you want to give them a try send me you address and I'll post them to you.
They will fit a 2" nominal bore tube.
