I am considering purchasing a 1967 OTS with a 3.8L engine. When accelerating immediately after a period of overrun blue smoke appears for a short period. I am told this is a symptom of valve stem wear and with luck can be corrected by replacing or installing valve stem seals. My question is....should the seals be installed or replaced on just the intake valves or on the exhaust valves as well??

Valve seal replacement
Bryan,
Its not valve wear its simply that the 3.8 never had the facilty to have stem seals fitted that didn't come until the 4.3 or at least the end of the production run on the 3.8.
Oil lies in the gallery and gets burnt as it enters exhaust. I have them fitted to mine though I can't remember if there is something else you require to allow them to be fitted a groove on the collet or a groove on the valve stem.
I did mine when I restored the car and fitted new valves etc. It was about 7 years ago now but I'm sure you have to fit the later style valves which I did since mine are 1 7/8" inlet and 1 3.4 exhaust.
Ahh it has come back to me now you need to remove the head, strip it all out, remove the valve guides and fit the later ones with the groove in to allow the top of the seal to locate then put evrything back together again.
Still want to go ahead? I would stick with the smoke for now until you plan to have the head overhauled. Of course it could be that this has already been done and the seals have worn or perished and just want replacing either way the head must come off.
