oil filter housing

Postby jmgtaylor » Wed Jul 08, 2009 11:09 pm

I have my engine in bits at the minute doing a rebuild as the car is in the painters.

Anyway, I have the oil filter housing removed, and it looks nothing like the one in the Sc Parts / SNG / E Type jag parts catalogues. Its similar in shape but then has a larger circular boss cast as part fo it also with the "tecalamit" markings on the rear and no other obvious markings

There seems to be some sort of popper valve in side that is assembled as part of the housing that I cant actually get to that appears that it is design to bypass the oil filter if too much presssure drop in order not to starve the engine of oil. Trouble is it has come out of its "hole" and wont go back in and stay in.

Dont want to put this back on my engine as sure fire way to scrap a newly build engine or can one of the "standard" types fit an S2 car.?

So either need another good second hand one, or some advice on how to repair.

Mark,

Is your filter housing a bowl type with a long bolt through the middle to secure the filter and bowl to the engine?
Or does your car have the later/modern screw on type filter?

The 'popper' valve you mention is a pressure relief valve which in case the filter should block bypasses the filter and takes oil straight back to the sump. The pressure relief is usually held in place by a large screw which simply screws into the filter housing and holds everything in place.
I can't understand why it won't go back in and stay there.

You can buy a modern type oil filter housing from Rob Beere they cost about £50 and allows you to use the modern type of screw on filter thats what I did.

Hope that helps a bit?

Dave
