As most damage to the engine is caused upon cold start up, is there an oil pump on the market one can fit so the engine can be primed with oil before starting?
Oil Pump
Oil pump
Hi
If you are concerned about start up after considerable periods of rest, ie over a winter then oil the bores, and turn the engine over several times on the starter, if its after say a month or so then just turn it over on the starter with a coil lead disconnected before normal start up. The standard oil pump moves a vast amount of oil and should be sufficient for this purpose.

Mr. C,
True most damage does occur to an engine on start up but its designed into the engine and is minimal. The oil pump is a constantly primed positive displacement pump, the cams sit in an oil bath and the cams will have a coating of oil on them permanently as does the rest of the engine.
If you lay your car up without running it for a long period take it for a long drive before you do and change the oil and filter this will remove any acids that build up in the oil. It's best not to frequently start the engine and let it idle if its stood for anytime wait for a decent day and take it for a 20 mile drive.
As Pat says after a long lay up remove the HT lead and turn the engine over a few times to get the oil pump running and a fresh coating of oil on everything.
You can also get a later XJ filter body that has a feed straight from the filer head to the cam shafts this also allows you to fit a spin on filter thats what I have done to my car.
In reality there is really nothing to worry about.
