Hi everyone,
I've recently bought a Spin-On oil filter conversion kit from SNG Barratt, part number OFK19/1, for my 1969, series 2, FHC E-type. The problem is it doesn't seem to fit. There is an aluminium adaptor piece that mounts on the existing crankcase housing and seals using the same O-ring as the original cartridge filter. It has a 3mm recess to allow it to seat on the O-ring.
The crankcase housing also has a disk on which sat the original oil filter, see the picture. This will be familiar to anyone who has changed the oil filter. Once the filter and canister have been removed you are faced with the disk and the central hole for the fixing bolt. The disk is mounted slightly proud of the lip of the O-ring groove and consequently prevents the adaptor from sealing on the O-ring. It appears to be attached to a threaded central tube and the top has been distorted with what looks like a centre-punch to prevent it from coming loose and I can't screw it inwards to improve the clearance.
I was wondering it I should simply remove it since the adapter and the base of cartridge filter both have large holes to aid oil flow and it appears to be an impediment to flow? But in doing so I think I might destroy it and so I'm reluctant to do it without advice. Also, the fitting instructions do not say remove or adjust the position of the disk.
I've doubled checked the version of the kit is correct for my engine number and I went as far as purchasing the other kit OFK18/3, which is is intended for earlier cars, just to make sure. The adapters in both kits are virtually identical and have the same O-ring recess depth.
Has anybody experienced similar problems? I would be grateful for any advice or help
Many thanks, John.
