You may have already got an answer to this question but I will try to answer anyway.

Having checked with the Jaguar Service Manual that I have, the book does not specify which way to fit the main bearing shells although the illustrations show the grooved shells fitted in the block. I think the important thing is to ensure that any holes in the shells line up with oil galleries in the block or bearing caps thus ensuring oil gets to the bearing surfaces.

Also, ensure the white metal surfaces of the thrust washers fitted at the centre main bearing face outward.
