Guys
Had my e type now for about 15 years. In it's time sadly it has had to have the engine out twice, and both times it was a faff (don't ask first was a rebuild and second was a failed oil pump 3000 miles later - nasty day that))
It looks like it might have to come out again - possible head failure - and at the same time the release bearing is noisy.
So with both (I would live with the second but now the head has gone) I was thinking of taking it out again rather than working in situ.
This time I wondered whether taking it out of the bottom is a better option?
Fortunately I have access to a friend's commercial garage ( mate's rates charges appl) and he has a nice old fashioned 4 poster and trolleys etc.
We have both been scouring the net and seeing people suggest taking out of the bottom.
Advantages seem to be that more 'stuff' is left bolted on (radiator etc) although I do appreciate you are still removing all the other necessaries.
Any experiences either way?
Anything to avoid if being brought out from underneath?
It certainly does seem to be an easier way than the huffing, puffing, tilting and dragging we did last time

Hi Russ
It appears there's no advice to be had on the E-Type forum. Its very quiet.
I have the opposite problem to you and am contemplating re-fitting my engine by effectively lowering the car onto the engine. I have thought about this and have concluded that it might not be possible to negotiate the way past the engine mounting brackets on the side frames unless the mounting brackets are removed from the engine.
The space between the frames is tight and the distance front to back doesn't have much room for movement (you have to remove the crankshaft pulley and damper to remove the engine by conventional means).
Also, you would have to strip the engine down further to take it out from below i.e. remove carburettors and manifold, alternator, etc.etc.
I'm not saying it can't be done, and I have heard of it being done but have never met anyone who's actually done it. Jaguar workshop manual doesn't suggest that it can be done this way either.
Not definitively helpful, I know, but these are my observations and I have decided to re-fit my engine by the more conventional means.
Regards

Hi
Engine out the bottom is definetlt possible, done it many times. Clear off all the sticky out bits, manifolds cars alternatot dist' etc. Remove TBR Plate, engine mount brackets all the normal stuff and lower away.
Few pic's on my website of doing just this.
Regards
Pat

The Haynes Owners Workshop Manual has a supplement at Chapter 13 on how to take the engine out from below.

Hi,
Out of the bottom is always the easiest route.
Having a 2 post lift helps that though
Cheers,
Keith
