engine noise

Postby rapier » Mon Jul 06, 2009 4:51 pm

I have a 1970 roadster that is regularly used and is in good condition. The engine does not use or loose hardly any oil. My query is that there is a ticking noise coming from the engine mainly heard when on light accelerator. The tappets have been checked several times but there is no change. Frankly, it is more anoying than anything else.
Can anyone shed any light on what the cause might be please.

Check your timing chains. Where the coil is mounted at the front of the engine is the engine breather housing this housing is held on with 4 chrome acorn type nuts. By removing the housing it gives you access to the chain tensioner you could try tensioning that.
If you read the Haynes manual it tells you how to do it, you will need a special tool that is available from most of the usual vendors.

I'm not saying that is the answer but worth checking the chains anyway as its a fairly simple job.

Hi Rapier

Sounds like pinking to me. Have you had the timing checked recently?

You could try an octane booster to see if that gets rid of the noise.
