My engine started leaking oil from the rear and I was afraid that it was the rear crankshaft seal. (an expensive job if needed)
However after removing the sump I noticed that somebody in the past had fitted the sump without a gasket and just some rubber type sealant.
This sealant was nearly all gone.
Upon stripping more bottom end components I found that no gaskets had been fitted but that they had use this sealant everywhere. This explained the various smaller leaks I had. (somebody must have had shares in a rubber company!!)
After cleaning and fitting the appropriate gaskets the engine has now been oil tight for more than a year.
Saved me a lot of money and it was a nice job stripping that part of the engine (cleaning out the sump) and to have a look inside the engine.
