Series 2 Front Number Plate

Postby MrNpw » Sat Oct 19, 2013 1:48 pm

Hi All

Does anyone know the correct fitment for the series 2 stick on front number plate ?

Obviously central but how far up from the mouth of the grill/front of bonnet should the plate be stuck ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

thanks
Nick

Hi Nick

Below is an article I have copied an pasted from Octane magazine regarding stick-on plates for E-Types etc...

Octane:
"Getting the appropriate style to suit your vehicle is quite easy. There are numerous suppliers, but the website www.tippersvintageplates.co.uk shows all the options commonly available and when they were current. Few people realise that 31/2in letters are correct for non-suffix registration marks, with 31/8in letters appropriate thereafter.

There’s just one area where regulations have been relaxed, and that’s the size of front numberplates where the vehicle is not built to accommodate standard-size plates. It’s also a requirement that the vehicle doesn’t have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval – which should still comfortably allow 1960s gems like Jaguar E-types, Alfa Spiders and many American cars to use the smaller plates, with a character height of just 64mm.

Where the law is less clear is whether 1960s sports cars can legally wear the stick-on type of plate often seen on
E-types. Until recently, you could buy the self-adhesive backgrounds and individual letters from trailer and caravan suppliers – and in some cases you still can – but their use on new trailers or ’vans has been banned since 2001.

The DVLA’s website bluntly states that stick-on plates are illegal for cars because they don’t meet current legislation, but it doesn’t say whether this is true for pre-73 vehicles – which, of course, have their own set of rules.
In practice, if it looks appropriate for the age of the car, chances are you’ll be OK – but we wouldn’t advise you to try the same trick on a 1990s XK8..."

So the summary is that technically nobody knows whether we can use stick-on plates or not, but reality says that all E Type owners have front stick on plates.

Looking through my text books, the situation regarding exact siting is similarly unclear, notable cars like 77RW and 9600HP, are central with the number plate set about the centre line between the headlamps, later 4.2 cars however are pictured with the number plate set lower down and almost on the lip of the front bonnet opening. CUT 7 actually has the number plate wrapped around the front opening.

So I think you may have to take a view on what you think looks aesthetically pleasing, later 2+2 V12 fitted with refective rather than black and white plates tend to be set further back, again more centred on the line through the centre of the headlamps. (Though having flicked through a few more pages I see J and K reg cars again with the plates set on the lip of the opening).

If any one else has any views I am sure they will come forward....
