Wire wheel conversion

Postby cathaypacificblue » Fri Oct 28, 2011 8:29 pm

Can anybody help ?

I have just purchased a S2 FHC E Type
The car is currently fitted with bolt on Dayton wheels and I would like to change them for a set of new spin on wire wheels.
Looking on ebay some hubs appear to have drill holes in them and looking at SNG's website the hubs have no drill holes.

Any one no what is actually required

Hello Cathay,

to fit splined wire wheels you need to replace all four hubs with spline hubs.

Hi

As Alec said, you will need to buy a full set of splined hubs to take the knock on wire wheels. These have part numbers:-

C19225/1 - RH Front
C19226/1 - LH Front
C20889 - RH Rear
C20890 - LH Rear

Wheels of your own choice but my preference is for MWS wheels rather than Dayton.

In addition to the hubs you will need to buy new wheel bearings all round and possibly consider changing the front discs while you're at it.

The fronts are relatively easy to do. The rears are a little more involved because you need to remove the hub carriers and drive out the hubs and fit the new ones using a special tool and then fit graded spacers to give the correct amount of bearing clearance. The outer wishbone pivots also need careful dismantling and re-assembly to give the correct amount of bearing pre-load.

It might also be worth thinking about the remaining service life of the rear brakes while you're at it as you are half way there while doing this job.

Not a job to complete in a weekend, unfortunately.

I suggest you buy the Jaguar Heritage CD containing the parts and service manuals for the car. Its probably the best money you will ever spend on your car.

Andy

Why not look at it the other way? You don't see many E-Types NOT on shiny wire wheels so you are in the minority, always a nice place to be when it comes to rarity.

A nice set of Dunlop replica alloys really look the business. I think you can get them either as spline or bolt on. A bit pricey though.

Could you post a picture of the wheels you have fitted?
