Classic Car Rescue.

Hello all,

how many tuned in to this first edition (Channel Five 8 p.m. this evening) in hope of an interesting programme on restoring an E Type only to switch off or, in my case switch over to Nigella's cookery programme?

What an appalling programme, which had no basis in reality in doing a proper restoration to almost any classic car in terms of budget, much less a Jaguar. Their laughable budget of £6,500 to restore the car wouldn't pay the wages of the four guys for the four weeks they were given to do the job?
Spares, OK, let's try our local scrap yards.

It was an insult to the intelligence of a six year old.

An embarrassment start to finish. The so called mechanic has been in a previous car related programme which was equally as dire.

When I see some of the American car shows such as hosted by the late Boyd Cottington or Chip Foose i feel ashamed that this UK based programme reflects so badly on the great engineering that is done in lots of UK restoration companies.

Pitiful!

God help the winner of the phone in competition, what a dog of a restoration! Signal Red, white engine bay, aweful sunroof, left hooker and Auto, as a 2+2 absolutely not worth the £30k it was valued at.
Wont be watching them cosmetically tarting up any other classic cars. Shame really because if they had undertaken the work properly it would create more interest in classic cars rather than make people run a mile from a potentially bodged classic

Here is a link to the programme.

An abject lesson in how not to "restore" a car. Loads of parts from a breakers yard and worse still in my opinion, the wrong attitude and prime movers involved as leaders. One of them, again in my opinion was a positively dangerous operator.

Not a car that I would want to own. Built up from the sweepings off the floor.

Really, really awful and all the worse because I missed Nigella to watch it. I texted a few petrolhead friends to tell them about this programme beforehand and had to send them all an apology afterwards! Won't be watching any more of this series.

Don't think the valuer did himself or his company any favours by taking part.

Nice sunroof though! - not sure why Jaguar didn't fit those snazzy glass pop-up types as standard.
What a simply appalling programme!
The 'restoration' was embarassing, not to mention the cringe-making, over-blown/ over-acted interplay between the silly presenters. (Like some sort of am-dram 'Odd Couple')
The sad thing is that to the uninitiated (ie the vast majority of viewers), they will come away with the idea that this is what 'calssic car restoration' is all about, and possibly worse - that an awful blown over, LHD, S2 2+2, with a crap sunroof, auto box and non-matching 'collars and cuffs' following the all-night respray, could conceivably be worth £30k!
Just when I thought things could get no worse, I tuned in to Wheeler Dealers to watch their 'restoration' of a MK2 - things got worse, a lot worse......

Just watched it this morning and I also feel cheated out of an hour of my life.

Clearly, they aren't making money from these so-called restorations but from the proceeds of the TV series. Staged accidents and shouting matches were what the programme producers were looking for. A pale and embarrassing imitation of American Hot Rod is what they got. The classic car movement got a reinforced image of dodgy geezers doing cut and shut jobs in back street garages.

How did they fix the hole in the floor? Not a single picture of this. Did they really strip down the rear axle to fit those used (scrap) brake discs that they pulled out of a skip? Clearly the series is aimed at the type of person who might easily be persuaded to part with £30k for this piece of junk (cleaned that one up).

The shiny E-Type with lovely chrome bits but hidden major problems is a very attractive proposition to the uninitiated. They have been a problem for so many years and there doesn't seem to be any sight of an end to it. It looks like these guys have just put another one out on the streets. At least we'll all be able to spot this particular one by that incongruous sunroof. Expect to see it for sale on Ebay any day soon.

I don't expect to see it in an RM Auction.

Stuart
