Postby robbins999 » Mon Sep 29, 2014 11:06 pm

I own a Jaguar x Type estate 2007 which has covered 81,000 miles .In my two years of owner ship the car has cost me over £2,000 in repairs , to date. Five new tyres, two front screens ,new over head light unit, new battery .two E,G,R units ,one E.G.R pipe ,Two fan belt tensioners ,One fan belt pulley .New brakes all round, new brake discs .One fan belt .Two lots of front wheel bearings. new gear box oil .full service at 55,000,65,000,and 75,000, and now the power steering no longer works , the pump has gone and the power steering pump has got a leak .has any other owner had the same problems.? Do I keep spending or do I sell.

does sounds like quite a lot for a 07 car. having aid that i think all jaguars are high maintenance machines, so its not all that unusual in jaguar ownership in general. having said that, the newer ones are generally more complicated, with simply more things to go wrong.
have you owned other jags before?
have you thought about an XJ40? easier to DIY maintain, and the parts are not expensive generally.

personally i think you have to seperate out repairs from running costs,
brake discs and tyres are not repairs, they are day to day items that EVERY car will need at some point,

so i think your being a little unfair on the car, and an inspection of the car may have hightlighted that these things were due to be changed when you purchased it ?

also the servicing costs are not the cars fault

so , in two years taking out the above, is it that bad ??

Without seeing Brake Busters comments, those were indeed my thoughts as well.

One does expect to have to replace components over and above that replaced as consumable and service items.

Double replacement of some components perhaps raises a question as to replacement quality. I always try to find reference on any ebay type listing for parts as being of OE quality. At least that gets a replacement part off to a good start.

80k miles is about the time many cars need major component changes. Lets look at my S-type as an example. These parts are over and above general consumable service parts which includes belts, filters, oils, piles of brake components, three new batteries and at least two new tyres each year.

44k, new front ARB bushes and ali tensioners.
54k, recon gearbox fitted. £1650 about six years ago.
57k reverse module.
58k replacement throttle body. (£1300 if bought new) £20 secondhand.
50k-60k three new window regulators.
60k, thermostat, tower and water pump, top idler bearing.
86k, All ARB vertical links, NSF wheel bearing, ball joint, rear track arms, one brake pipe. Oil and water additives to stop leaks.

There are also other bits which I`ve also had to nail back on.

No car is indestructible. Some last longer than others. Look at it this way. In the 50`s and 60`s you were lucky to get 40k miles out of an engine. If you did you wrote to the manufacturer and told him how pleased you were!

Maintenance and costs are a necessary expense required to keep an aging car clanking along. The older it gets, the higher the annual costs are which escalate on an exponential scale the longer a car is kept on the road or until all the worn out parts are replaced. Then you start again.....until it all falls apart again!

The biggest groan is not so much parts costs but labour rates to be paid out if professional maintainers are employed. That could easily add a good 70% to running costs. Suffice to say the only way I can keep my car on the road is to do as much work as I can myself. For me it is the only option.

I feel very sorry for you.
I bought me X Type Sport 2.0D new in December 2006. It has been serviced as per the schedule at Jaguar dealers.
It has now completed 95000 miles and the only failures I have had are the power steering pulley came loose and the turbo pipe split causing black smoke. I have had tyres, brake pads (not discs) and other service items replaced as necessary.
I think the X Type is a fantastic car in every way and wish I could buy another new one.
:D
