I have not got my Jag yet, joined to hopefully improve my odds of getting a good one. I am looking at a 2.2d SE 2007/8 . i am very inexperienced with diesel cars, so can someone please guide me through what to expect on start up. i mean, is there a delay before turning the ig key? Will it run lump at first because it is a diesel?, what light should be showing on the instrument panel , and when.
not sure about tyre depth these days, is it 3mm over 30% of tyre width? Can a garage legally sell a car with worn tyres? Discs , how deep is the wear mark on the disc before replacement is needed? any other relevant info twd buying please fill me in.
Thanks Andy

Hi Andy

Thanks for your message and good luck car hunting. I have a few bits of info for you.

Regarding diesel start up, yes there is a delay while the glow plugs do their bit - an orange 'coil' shaped light will illuminate in the instrument pack when you switch on the ignition and once this goes out (after a couple of seconds) the engine can be started. Should run smoothly as soon as started although will quieten down once warmed up. If engine sounds rough on idle and gets worse under load (e.g. turn on air-con) then this probably points to requiring a new serpentine belt tensioner, there is a kit for this but not really an easy diy job.

Regarding tyre wear the legal requirement is:

1.6 mm minimum tread depth around the entire circumference of the tyre and across at least 75% of the central breadth of the tyre. General consensus is that below 3 mm the tyre will not perform properly in wet conditions.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Thanks Steve,

I am having doubts about getting an X type now as i have warned by a chap who had full exposure to the costs when things go wrong, said his 2.0d transit had wrong oil put in and this blew the camshaft oil supply gallery which cases the cam to move around , ie becomes loose. Also he had issues with the dual mass flywheel but before they decided it was this they charged him for new injectors. I am told this is the same engine in the jag as the transit, though the later years are modified to cope better?

Andy,

I would think the Transit's problems came from the wrong oil and this is hardly a good reason to park the purchase of an X-Type. Talk to some of the members in your local region - there are bound to be some with x-Types; all older cars will have problems, that includes Beemers and Mercs, but the beauty of our club is the network of people to call upon to offer advice and guidance. With the numbers of X-Types out there with a bit of research it should be possible to find a dealer serviced well looked after model that comes without too many surprises. have a look at the JEC Classifed webpages there may be something there

hmm, luxury car with lada running costs syndrome...........

seriously , if in doubt about any private car purchase, get it checked by a reputable garage or even the AA etc , they dont have to be Jag specialists to advise on wether a vehicle is in good condition

with regard to the X-Type, i recently bought a petrol manual one, and other than a few service items, its running perfect for a 9 year old car , yours not being anywhere near that age just look out for miss treatment and lack of servicing,

as with any car make, the X-type has a few issues, yes , the dual mass flywheel can cause problems, and a few trim bits fall off, but nothing more than any other brand of car......

take it for a test drive, if you like it , buy it if in budget , and then put aside normal running costs monies to cover regular servicing and enjoy......

I normally drive cars that cost two grand , and the last i kept for 10 years upto now. So the jag is a big step up for me, i am not fearing a petrol engine as i have rebuilt a few, but diesels i know little about and the weight will be too much for my jacks and axle stands. I have pretty much decided on the x type even if i am unlucky i suppose, thinking positively  the money i save from NOT buying a bmw would in theory bank me at least 4 grand and that is a lot of servicing and faults, that i might not get...

so cheers guys for keeping me straight.

Hi
My son bought an X type from main stealer and lumpy run at start up ended up with requirement of 4 new injectors new ECU and repropgramming. Fortunately all covered under warranty with some reticence on their part. Since this runs like a new car with 78000 miles on clock
