Space Saver Spare Wheel

I had the unfortunate event of hitting a pot hole and damaging a rim, although tyre looks OK.
Fitted the space saver spare wheel and then put the 18" * 7.5" Aruba wheel and inflated tyre into the spare wheel well and refitted the boot floor cover.
So why is it called a space saver when it clearly isn't, and why can't we have proper spare wheels and tyres.
I understand that on some new cars you only get a tube of tyre repair gunge and compressed gas! Not much help if the rim is damaged!
Grumpy old man; sorry :?

Not a fan of the space saver, some people buy themselves a full sized spare, plenty on Ebay cheap enough. As you have found, they do fit in the boot.
Would rather have a space saver than a can of tyre weld though
