Considering an X type as a run about?

Hello all,

just been looking at a few X types on E-Bay. I know very little about them, what is the difference between the 'Sport' and standard car? Any pointers as what to look at? Fortunately there seem to be plenty of manual transmission cars about and petrol engined also. Diesel and automatic are definitely not an option.

i bought a 54 plate ' classic ' two weeks ago with convenience pack ( metallic paint, rear sensors , electric folding mirrors and adjustable headlights ) and it also had a removable Jaguar towbar with double sockets fitted , private sale.

all for £1900 , with full service history . 100k miles and as straight as a die...

dont get hung up on leather interior , its all very nice, but in older cars can be very worn , and can look untidy , i have the ' velour sand ' and is very warm and comfortable , and looks smart as well,

the thing to remember is that there are absolutely loads out there, ranging from £900 upwards,

from what i saw, stay away from pre 2002 cars , as there is an issue with sill rust , the sill you see is a plastic cover trim , and the car rusts out badly behind it

the ' facelift cars ' 2004 onwards are slightly different, and different trim packs , and there is a multitude of trim packs available, from a basic one with no prefix, then to an ' S ' ( for standard ? ) , then classic etc etc , but remember that any model can have nearly any option fitted from new, so each car is individual on the most part

i went for a 2.1 petrol manual , very nice to drive, and quite economical , especially compared to my 4ltr V8 and my 5.3ltr V12 cars , lol

Happy hunting

Hello BB,

thanks for the reply, you car seems to be a lot of car for the money. Is the 'Sports' a trim option or is it more than that. Trim and 'toys' are not important to me and indeed fancy wheels especially if with low profile tyres would not attract me at all but a sport suspension package would, if there is such an option?

the sports version did have lower and stiffer suspension , and i understand that they were all 2.5 V6 4 wheel drive cars ,

there were also special radiator grilles , window trims, and front seats ,

i think it was more a sales spec for ' younger ' drivers than actual performance enhancements that meant a great deal

i would got for a ' facelift ' car from 2004 onwards, then its up to you with regard to spec and cost ,

facelift cars can be quickly identified by a different steering wheel , with buttons on the covers , rather than slung under the airbag, but this is not definitive, as they can be retro fitted to earlier cars quite easily

although a private sale, it was advertised on ebay , and i made a 45 mile trip to see her , and i carried out a HPI check before handing over the cash.....

I sympathize with Piman, i am looking at the 2.2 litre diesel Jag and you just don't know where you with the adverts. Their is a disclaimer printed on the adverts for "autotrader" stating they are not covered for any inaccuracy in the advert. So where does that leave the buyer, well for me, i have to check each car, but against what? I have no list of all the extras available, so i feel i am trying to buy a car with iffy information. There is so much kit on the cars these days even the sales staff cannot be relied upon for accurate spec. eg i asked one dealer to explain euro pack 4 , they had no idea.. :?

I bought an 02 plate X type last year. 3.0lt Sport manual, touch screen sat nav, air con, full leather, heated windows etc. etc. Cost £2700. Well pleased with it. Used it as a run around so mainly short trips hence only returned 19mpg, but as my total mileage was low it didn't matter. I believe people on here say 27-30 is quite possible on runs. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention, it's quick!

Traded it in after about 9 months, no problem with the car, just fell in love with the XKR!

19mpg, oh I remember those days.................
