Noise When Turning Right

Hi!

I'm new to the X-type forum. Sorry, my other Jag is the green S-type-R in my profile picture.

Does anyone have any ideas about why:

My 2006 X-Type Estate SE, 2.5L, Automatic, AWD, 75,000 miles:

Has started making an audible humming sound when I make a right-hand turn, under power, such as accelerating into a roundabout. The sound a) seems to be coming from the back of the car, b) only happens at moderate speeds (around 20 or 30 mph), c) stops as soon as the car straightens up out of the turn, d) only happens after the car has been driven by at least 10 miles, e) only happens when turning right.

Any ideas are welcome.

My S-Type has been a marvellous car, and I would buy a new one if they were still for sale.

has the power steering got the additive in the fluid , this is a well known issue with X-Type steering and is easily added , this can cause strange noises

other than that, i suspect a wheel bearing ,

or , dont turn right...........

I've had a go at the not turning right strategy - got some funny looks in the round-abouts...

The noise seems to come from lower in the back of the car - but I'll give the power steering fluid top-up a whirl.

Believe it or not, the noise seems to only happen when two people are in the front, and one person is in the back. I know this sounds unbelievable, but we've experimented : One or two people in the front, nobody in the back = no noise. Two people in the front, two on the back = no noise. Two in front, one in back = noise between 10 and 30 mph and turning right. No, before you ask - we haven't tried one person in front, and one or two in the back.

I agree, it sounds like some sort of bearing issue... I was hoping you Jag geniuses would be able to help me narrow this down before we visit the Jag repair shop. I can see the service reception girl and the mechanic thinking I've lost my marbles. It'll be a struggle for them to make the noise happen, and diagnose it.

Mystery solved!

It turned out the problem was the drivers-side rear brake caliper getting stuck on. Funny thing, anyone in the car would have sworn the sound was on the left side, but the problem was on the right side. And I wonder why it only whines when we turned right?

Grange Jaguar Exeter did a fine job of fixing up the brake system, and the car runs much quieter now.

Mind you, I think the fuel mileage should be better than the 27 or 28 miles per gallon I generally get...

Copper grease rules ok when it comes to caliper carrier sliding pins.

My S-type had a slightly duff handbrake issue at MOT time recently. Turned out to be one seized caliper pin which ruined the handbrake action. Effect seen as one very worn brake pad. However, no noises detected.

So my car doing only about 4k miles annually started to solidify due to low miles and lack of action. Low miles cars can be a double edged sword.
