Retrofit for Cruise Control

My car is a 2005 Estate , which I've had for just over a year . It doesn't have Cruise Control , which ideally I need for long journeys as my right ankle suffers pain from an old injury . Is it feasible to do this , as someone on the internet claims this is easy by just buying the parts & it's DIY for the home mechanic . I'm a bit sceptical about the effects on the existing electronic system , so are these concerns irrelevant , & it's straightforward ?
