I have an issue with my 2001 Y reg X type, from cold starts first turn of the key. How ever when hot, from driving a short distance, or just standing in the heat of the sun for short time, the car will run for a millisecond and no restart until the following morning when cooled down.
My question is, Have any other members had this problem or know what is the cause of my issue.
Any help / advice greatly appreciated

Re: X type not starting
In the absence of any hard data to go on, I'll make a simple suggestion for a check that can be made with no tools or meters.
In general, a current passing through a resistance increase the temperature of the resistance and that in turn increases the resistance further. In earlier X types, the heavy duty cable from the battery to the starter motor has been known to corrode internally, especially at the crimped connection between the wire and the battery positive terminal clamp.
So check the battery positive terminal's temperature, by feeling it carefully after starting the car from cold, again after the engine has warmed up and yet again after unsuccessfully trying to start the engine and see if it heats up. It can get very hot so be careful and if it is very hot, then that has probably identified your problem. The only solution is to replace the cable and its connectors with a new one.
Any auto-electrician would be able to make a new cable up for you.
Let the Forum know how it goes and if that's not the solution we can have another think and try something else!
