Tyres and snow

Was wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem to myself. I have a 2.0D with 17" alloys booted with the standard Pirelli Assimetrics on them. With all this snow we have been having it has shown up that this setup is rubbish. I am having big problems getting around. Is there anybody who is using different tyres that find they perform better in this weather ? I would like to try and avoid going to a full snow tyre as this weather is only short lived here (hopefully) so was wondering if there was an alternative.

The X-type is quite a light weight fwd car isn`t it?
The tyres you have fitted are a general normal use pattern with an emphasis on grip in wet weather. Ice and snow use is something else!!
Short of going to mud and slush tyres, I think you might have to grin and bear it. What about a set of snow chains?
On the converse side, My V8 S-type is quite the best performing car I`ve ever owned for snow use. I`ve loads of tools in the boot which helps the driving wheels dig in. It seems to be able to drag itself out of snow covered situations very well. It is also very predictable on the minor domestic roads which have not been cleared yet.
Horses for courses I think. Perhaps we all need Range Rovers in these conditions.
Not much else can be suggested can it?
The sooner this all thaws out, the better.

Fit 2 space savers to the front
Thin tyres are better in the snow.

I put Federal Himalaya snow tyres on my X Type which I use in Austria. Being a 3.0 V6 it's AWD of course, but the overall snow performance is amazing. However, the locals reckon there's more gain from snow tyres than AWD, and having driven FWD cars here on snow tyres I agree with them. These tyres are not expensive on the internet, I think I paid about £360 for a set of four 225/45VR17.
