Touching up spots on the bodywork

Postby JagCH » Fri Sep 02, 2011 12:31 pm

Dear All,

I would like to retouch some small spots on my X-type body work (small scratches, stone impacts while drivings and so on).

What is the best way to do this? I saw that there are some "markers" - Are they any good?

If not, any tips on applying the "official" touch up paint that Jaguar sells? (Use of clear coat, surface preparation, etc.)

Thanks a ton!!

Cheers,

Gonzalo

Parts, materials and finish are only as good as the guy who does them. Practice first on someone else's car!

Most, if not trained in panel crafts will make a mess of a paint repair. If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it.

If you have the skills, Halfords will mix the paint in a spray can for you. About £16 retail per can. The paint code for your car is on the passenger A-post and is usually a three letter code.

If you want a top job for touch in work, then you could employ Halfords contractors, Shines. The offer a mobile service and are very good. I have used them. Visit Halfords and they will quote for you.

Paint sticks are ok for keeping rust at bay, but do not fill gashes in paint or otherwise cover abrasions. Generally, the colour match will be inaccurate and you will always see where paint has been bogged in.

With most things in life, you get what you pay for. With paint repairs you pay for the panel man`s experience. That cannot be learned overnight.

If your car is a good one and you want to keep it that way, I would employ professional assistance.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for the comments. The problem is, I live in Switzerland, and the offers I got for doing the touch ups are... scary.

What about the touch up "kits" that I heard that Jaguar sells?

Cheers,

Gonzalo
