Rear tailgate glass release

The rear glass has stopped opening on my 2005 2.5 Sport estate. It went through a spate of opening for no reason (unless the central locking was locked), then it has stopped opening at all, so now I cannot open the rear glass.

I've no idea where to start - it must be an electrical fault somewhere, but where? Could this be a DIY job or do I need to go to a dealer / specialist? Has anyone else had the same problem?

I had same problem on 2007 model took to the dealer new switch 5 min fix. no idea of cost as under warranty seems to be a common problem according to dealer should not be difficult as it took him 5 min.

Had the same issue, the tailgate glass on the X-type estate kept popping open when I started the engine, I had to shut it each time then it stopped opening altogether using the button.

Initially I suspected the latch and subsequently went about sourcing the same from the local Jaguar main stealer, during a conversation with the parts guy, explaining the problem he advised that the fault might not be the latch but the liftgate window glass release switch (part no C2S 50868, cost £68.60 incl VAT), a known fault due to water ingress. Took about 30 minutes to replace, fairly easy job covered on jaguartechinfo.com (GTR) article 76.19.59.60.

Just completed repair on my 2009 X type estate, (that I bought new).

Not dealt with under guarantee, (I didn't bother to ask, the dealer, Watford Jaguar, had already spent £12,000 defending a claim regarding my claim of £5,000 regarding complaints when I felt I had largely to concede - I couldn't risk having to pay that kind of amount!). I found, as have others, that water gets into the rather silly switch, causing nuisance operation then failure. I removed the original switch and fitted a simple small push button switch that I had removed from a modest hi-fi unit, reassembled and all is now OK. Time taken about an hour. Cost about 3p. I sealed the assembly with grease, not glue, so hopefully no more water can get in but if it does it will be easy to strip.

This was a very stupidly constructed assembly - how many more such traps are there for me to find apart from the shoddy plastic bumpers and sills, dubious thermostat, poor stereo etc?
