Meguiars Ultimate

Postby t-stag » Wed Mar 06, 2024 4:48 pm

About time that I gave my X-Type Estate a good clean and polish.
Using Meguiars Ultimate Compound, Polish and Liquid Wax.
The Compound does leave a residue after application which is difficult to remove with a dry cloth as recommended.
Had to use a damp cloth to get the residue off.
Just wondering if that negates the Compound.

Hi Steve, the temperature is possibly a bit low for the full treatment, which might explain why you are having difficulty getting the Compound wiped off. Don't worry about it though, the Compound's job is to clean the paintwork and help with the removal of the swirls in the lacquer top coat, it doesn't add much to the shine by staying in place. Similarly with the Polish, its job is to develop the smooth surface and thereby leave the paintwork looking like it is wet. Again, that skin of polish largely comes off with the wipe over and the application of the wax is what preserves the wet look shine, which itself comes from the preparation of the paintwork, not any remaining in place application of compound or polish. The notion of "polishing" on the shine is a little outdated and goes back to the Simoniz days, where it was a polish containing a wax. We know better now.

If you are having any difficulty removing the "haze" from the Compound or the Polish, before applying the wax, use a light misting of Detailer to wipe across the surface ahead of applying the final coat of wax.

Hi Steve,
Great to hear of your X-type being given the Meguiars treatment. It's that time of the year when shows and events are not that far off and spending a few hours outside in the Spring sunshine (hopefully) is a pleasant prospect.
I have been using Meguiars Quick Wax in a spray bottle with a microfibre towel recently and it has helped maintain the paint finish over winter without too much effort or any white residue. A day with the Mirror Bright paste polish is on the cards though to really clean and lift the paint!
All the best

Hi Dave. Day 2 and I used the Ultimate Polish. Same problem with a residue that had to be washed off with a damp cloth. Maybe it is because the bottles are a few years old? Wax tomorrow!
Our East Sussex Region are having our Annual Show at Michelham Priory on Sunday 21 July and you are most welcome as is Jim if you fancy a trip to the South Coast.

Hi
Thanks for the invite. Our daughter and family live in Staplehurst, Kent which I wouldn't think is that far from the event? It would be good to combine a visit with a Jag day!

Excellent. Staplehurst isn't far and we have invited the Kent Region along with others.
We have also invited other car clubs for British marques, so should be a great day out.

I think I will have to try this Meguiars polish.
So far I have only used Autoglym.
Happy polishing.

Day 3 and Ultimate Wax. Much easier to wipe off residue.
It would be interesting to get our experiences with different products.

Perhaps you could write it up for the magazine?

Finishing a black car is probably the ultimate challenge, if you have perfected it we could all learn from you. I would certainly include an article in the magazine X-type section. Some time ago, I went to Meguiars in Daventry who demonstrated to a group how to prep and recover a black finished car, it did require a DA polisher though, but amazing what can be achieved using very little product.
