Clutch or Clutch pressure Plate gone

Postby cotoole » Mon Jun 14, 2010 9:30 am

Hi all!

I was travelling from Cork to galway last Saturday when my clutch gave up the ghost. A mechanic had a quick look and thought it was the fly wheel and pressure plate. It is a 2.0 D with 44k miles on it. From searching the net quite a few people seem to have this problem. I bought the car last september with 6 months warranty. Can anyone tell me if there is a recall on this know problem or if Jaguar cover this repair.

Many Thanks
Chris

Clutch Gone

Postby cotoole » Wed Jun 16, 2010 10:47 am

Well I thought I would update any viewers of this item.

I had to get a new clutch and flywheel at 44k miles. I only have teh car since last september and the dealer warranty was un in March. It cost me 1700 Euro. Wow! Was I shocked. No good will from the dealer either.

If I had know a Jaguar was going to cost me this much I would have stayed with my Toyota Auris. Boring but a hell of a lot cheaper.

Wonder what can go wrong next. Gear box, Turbo?

Any advice welcome?

My pal runs a fleet of Mondeo cabs. As such you can imagine he knows the weak points of these cars well. His fleet average around 8ok miles annually. Clutches on these cars are a problem as they are of the dual mass version which is different to a normal conventional arrangement. They are a notoriously unreliable standard fit. The damper in the flywheel breaks up and failure results. In the process the break up destroys the crankshaft to flywheel mounting bolts and the resultant abrasive dust finds its way into the starter motor which then also fails!.

As the X-type Jaguar is closely related to the Mondeo, I wonder if the Jaguar has the same clutch arrangement.

My friend buys an aftermarket clutch kit from Valeo for £280 which includes a new flywheel and conventional clutch kit including a modified hydraulic thrust release mechanism. He then pays a man to fit the mod kit for £160. End result- no more trouble. Total cost around £440.

It might be worth investigating the possibility of using such a conversion kit in an X-type if a dual mass unit is fitted as standard.

Does any one know if this is the case?

July 2013 and just replaced clutch and dual-mass flywheel on my '05 2.0d Euro4. Had the car since 2008, 19,000 miles and now covered 112,000 miles. Been used continuously as a driver training vehicle including A LOT of towing and this is the first clutch change. Really can't complain!

Had the clutch, flywheel and concentric slave cylinder replaced using genuine LUK parts at Mr. Clutch for £725.00 inc VAT, with a two-year / 20,000 mile warranty.

Symptoms were quick to develop, started with a slight 'vibration / noise' on partial clutch depression and over the course of a weekend of light driving developed into a distinct rattle (search this on you tube and you will see good examples of a dmf failing!). Knowing how spectacularly the flywheel can let go I booked the car in straight away and the job was done in a day.

Inspecting the parts removed from the car showed that the flywheel was shot but the clutch was still in reasonable shape!

All running fine now.

Be aware that pretty much all modern diesels use the dual mass flywheel now, just Google any manufacturer and DMF and see what you get. They are under the heading of good idea (in terms of refining the drive train) but not up to the job.
So don't knock the X-Type for using a DMF, all the manufacturers use them and they are all expensive when they fail.
