I have a auto trans noise like a knocking when accelerating when cruising is not so apparent my independent jag workshop says this is normal as the sound isolation was not very efficient is there any truth in this fact.?

In my opinion there is absolutely no truth in such a view!! We've had our X Type from new in 2005 and it's never given a hint of knocking whether accelerating gently or flat out. I would say it's generally as quiet or even quieter than many of today's cars. 2004 was hardly the age of vintage motoring!

One of my tests for the veracity of such opinions is too ask how the original salesman described it; Don't worry sir, they all knock like that!

Is the knocking a regular one? Does it change its rate with speed and/or engine rpm. Maybe it's a fault in the propshaft or a failed exhaust hanger?

Are you dependent on garage mechanics or do you get out and get under when necessary?

Hello,
No I have knowledge understanding certain things however I am reliant on specialist garages.
Mileage is only 47k and the transfer box refurbished and propshaft re balanced this noise has appeared to be greater since she runs quieter. The noise is very difficult to describe sounds vary on how long you run, it could be a bearing or a trans mount. Thanks for your comments.

With all that in mind, my recommendation would be to get a second opinion!
Depending on where you live, there may be another member who could take a ride with you and maybe compare and contrast your X type with his?
