renewall of crankshaft, big end and main bearings

Postby ajb633 » Tue Aug 05, 2008 12:54 am

I have an x-type 3.0L manual with big  end failure. We are aware that only standard bearings are available, and having removed the engine from the car, we find that the crankshaft big end journals are damaged, and intend to replace crankshaft along with big end and main bearings. However, as the Jaguar workshop manuals I have on CD, do not give any information on engine rebuild, in particular the 'bottom end', we purchased a copy of Haynes manual for the Ford mondeo which listed the ST220 engine. Unfortunately, on removing the outer packaging from this, we are disappointed to find that the only reference to the V6 in the engine overhaul section is to explain that Ford say that the main bearings cannot be renewed and the lower crankcase cannot be re-used once removed.

I understand that the crankshaft is available from Jaguar along with the bearings although we do of course intend to thoroughly examined the rest of the engine before deciding to replace the crank etc. However, any informatiuon anyone can offer on this subject would be much appreciated.

"Ford say that the main bearings cannot be renewed and the lower crankcase cannot be re-used once removed. "

Yet...

"I understand that the crankshaft is available from Jaguar along with the bearings"

I am confused. How come Jaguar can supply crank and bearings for a crankcase which "cannot be re-used once removed"?....

Ah! MAIN BEARINGS cannot be renewed. They don't say anything about the big ends not being replaceable....

Sorry, I wouldn't listen to either of them. It's only an engine after all. A good engineering shop should be able to regrind the crank and supply oversized big end bearings to suit.

Or are the X-Type shells gold plated and only available from Jaguar at a rip off price?

I realise this is a very old post, but I may have some information that maybe of use to other X type 3 ltr AJ-V6 owners.

I bought a 3 ltr S type manual a year ago and religiously oil and filter changed the engine. A month ago with the oil low (1/8" above minimum) and driving 'quickly' I ran a big end. To cut a long story short I have fitted another 3 ltr engine, but found David Bye of West riding Jaguar in Mirfield who rebuilds Jaguar engines and reasonably regularly buys up S type engines, removes the cranks, rods and pistons and fits the lot into the X type engine (slight differences externally).

I also found there are slight differences between early (pre 2000 engines and the 2000 engine) as well as the changes at 2002.5. The early engine had a tee bar dipstick and holds 5.9 ltrs the later (2000) engine has a 'ring pull' handle and holds 6.5 ltrs. With extensive measurement I can't find any differences in the sump, suction pipe and other castings other than the markings on the dipsticks. Jaguar raised the oil level by 14mm and then made a one line comment in the specifications. BUT at this new maximum level the oil at stop is just touching the wash plate below the crankshaft and drops 1/2" on start up.

The above refers to the early S type engine and sump, not sure when the X type got the 3 ltr engine.

I am now running the car with the 2000 dipstick and keeping it at maximum, no more no less, and Jaguar oil filters.

Best of luck
