engine stopping

I have 54 plate x-type 2.0d estate.Just pootling along at 50-60MPH when the engine just stopped as if you had turned the ignition off.It did this in quite a dangerous position,just after a blind bend,so we were lucky an accident was not caused.The only light that came on was the glowplug one(solid not flashing).On turning off and on it restarted ok and drove as normal.Shall I just throw the car away? I have got it booked in for a diagnostic check but on reading the forums this could be a waste of time and money.Any help would be appreciated.Maybe pushing my luck buying another Jag as my e-type gives me enough headaches already!!

A diagnostic check is always the way to go as a starting point. Anything else is pure guess work.

It really is a case of start with the basic diagnosis first before doing anything else. In the meantime a check around the engine bay may reveal a basic issue. Perhaps just a pipe off or split. Sometimes you can be lucky.

Once you have a known starting point you can progress towards fixing the issue. Many of these faults are often well known to an experienced maintenance guy so I suggest you might be best finding a local independent man and go from there.

I had a similar experience with my 2 litre TDi Mondeo, ( much the same engine ) I had the caravan on tow at the time as well. managed to coast to a safe stop, switched off and then restarted ok, all was ok for the rest of holiday. However, a couple of weeks later it happened again, I got it checked and it turned out to be the camshaft senser , a new one was fitted and all was fine.

That just reminded me of a friend also with a TDCI Mondeo.

He had exactly the same fault which turned out to be the cam sensor.
