2.2D Glow plug light and power loss

Postby StephenBass » Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:38 pm

Have a 2.2D Estate with 25,000 miles, which has been main dealer serviced since it was bought new in March 08 .

Have twice experienced over this week-end the 'glow-plug' light coming on and engine power loss ( assume that is limp-home mode in action?) after about an hour and a half's normal driving.
Problem then disappears at the next cold start.

The internet seems to be full of gloom-and- doom merchants who have spent large £sums on diagnosis/repair of similar sounding problems, but without getting any success !

Hopefully, there must be some people in the club who have experience of this and can point me in the right direction, to avoid such a fate.....would be most grateful.

Thanks,

Steve Bass

Hi Steve

Only time I have had anything like this was on my 2.0 diesel where the glow plug light came on for an instant for a split second accompanied by a momentary engine blip. This was with a cold engine and has not appened again (touching big lump of wood!).

Would suggest trying XJK engineering if not already done.

I will also make an enquiry at my local Jag specialist when I return back home to the Isle of Wight later this week. When the problem occurs does it stay or is it a blip?

Bye for now

Hi,
I took the liberty of emailing David Marks, and I believe you did also (great minds), but i think he sent you this reply, but for clarity.

I would hazard a guess at the EGR valve being the source of the problems.

Usually it is either this and/or a split in the air pipe leading to the valve but if the pipe were split, one would expect the fault to be constant.

Sometimes these valves respond to cleaning but probably not even one in ten, so my advice would be to change the EGR valve.

Hope this is some help

There are plenty of new and used EGR valves on eBay. Worth a look but compare to other sources before committing.

Thanks to everyone for their very prompt responses !

General view (and David Marks in particular) is to suspect the EGR valve itself, given the problem goes away when engine is re-started.

Will certainly try to focus the repairing dealer on the EGR and avoid expensive wild goose chases.......

Cheers,

Hi Steve

Regarding change of EGR valve, I am not familiar with the 2.2 version of the diesel but have cleaned and replaced egr valve on my EU4 spec 2.0d several times and it is a relatively easy job depending on technical ability. (Having seen the state of the valve the first time I removed it I decided an annual clean would be part of the vehicle maintenance schedule!). For my engine a new OE egr valve and accompanying seals was well under £80 from Jag dealer (sorry, am away from home at the moment otherwise I could have let you know exact cost).

Regarding the split egr hose that was mentioned I have also replaced this. When they split you will notice a loss of turbo boost and a very loud hiss of air when turbo boost is demanded. These hoses pick up a lot of oil contamination and subsequently tend to weaken so it might be pertinent to change it too if the egr valve is coming off anyway.

As I say, my experience is with the later version of the 2.0 diesel but hope the comments may be of use anyway.

Best of luck, Steve Cocks

Hi, had a simular problem on my 2008 2.2d auto, with the gearbox fault warning. Taken to dearer and its the EGR valve that needs replacing at around £400. Still waiting delivery of the valve, seems like theres a few diffrent ones and dearer ordered the wrong one first time round. Good old lancaster jag's

:?: Can someone please explain what an EGR valve is, what it actually does and where on the engine is it located. ? Many thanks, Chris Bartram. X type 2.2d.

Although for a Ford Scorpio, this link gives quite a good insight into the principles of ERG operation. There will of course be variations on the Jaguar diesel system but this is a good overview.

Many thanks for that Mike, I found it quite useful. Now I can check mine. Chris.

Looking for some advice please. My wife's 2.2 D Turbo has developed an intermittent fault. Most of the time the car performs flawlessly. Then for some reason the "glow-plug" light flashed and "Gearbox Fault" displayed with limp mode. Stop the car, switch off then back on and all is well for a while.

My initial thoughts were around turbo and or "Actuator". On start up the arm moves across and back on engine off. I'm guessing that this means the mechanical side of the system is working as it should. Also. The exhaust is clean with no soot in the tail pipe. So I'm guessing as well that the EGR is at least operating to some extent.

I'm leaning towards an electronic issue with the "Actuator" but not totally sure. Can these units just be exchanged/replaced or is the process more complicated/involved. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated. No fault codes (or at least none that I could reach).

Many thanks

Further to my post above. I have been experimenting with different driving conditions. The problem (in my case, glow plug light accompanied by "gearbox fault) is intermittent. I can drive under full acceleration, stop start, motorway and gentle, and then without warning occurs. I'm inclined, still towards the acuator but would still appreciate any other advice/observations.
Many thanks

Hi Nick
Have you had the car scanned for fault codes at a Jaguar specialist or with someone who has the right level of equipment to hopefully find a code that can explain the behaviour? It might help to eliminate items and target potential components if nothing else? Hopefully there is a a recognised specialist near you.

Hi Dave - In truth no. I have a couple of scanners (though fairly basic) and neither present any codes or issues. I do need to have it properly scanned. Still inclined given the intermittent nature of the issue to still think towards the Actuator. But, won't know without a full scan.

As an aside no issues with smoking of pipes leaking, EGR and vanes move without resistance on the turbo via the actuating mechanisim.
