After much pondering have decided to replace the Scoobie (with 174,000 miles on it) with an X Type instead of another Scooby.
Mostly because it is the same colour as my XJR-s!
I've been on the XJS forum for a long time so will no doubt be doubling my posts from here on in.
I found it very difficult to find an X Type locally as they all seem to be located 'oop north' for some reason so when this one appeared 20 minutes away I shot down to have a look at it.
Very, very tidy with only a small scratch on the rear bumper which the dealer will sort.
Not as many bells and whistles as the Scooby (a 1999 Legacy Outback), no sunroofs or heated seats but not as many miles either!

well done

good sturdy reliable cars from my experience,

we have had our 54 plate saloon two years now, some running gear refurbishment, some belts and pulleys in the engine bay ,and that's it , normal stuff really

Ok, deal done, Scooby gone and now the pleased owner of a 54 plate 2.5 SE manual estate in (so far!) very good condition.
First impressions are very positive, nice and taught, handles nicely and goes well.
It seems a bit less roomy than the Scooby notably the load area and there is no
room for my clutch foot when not clutching but other than that it is excellent.
A couple of questions:
Are the rear parking sensors a standard fit? There are the small plastic covers on the lower bumper but nothing happens when reversing close in. Faulty or not there?
There is low level whine from the transmission when I reach 70mph; it stops when I lift off but resumes again when I press the accelerator; serious?

cool

check the reverse lights work when its selected, as the sensors are fed from the live reverse lights , i had to install a new reverse switch to my gearbox when i got her, common fault

the next thing is to select reverse with just the ignition in position 2 , and listen to each sensor, if listen carefully you will get a fast clicking from it, any that don't are dead and either need replacing or the wiring checked, as they can come off the back of them

enjoy

Thanks BB.
Any thoughts on the transmission noise? I took out an extended warranty so hopefully anything untoward will be covered!

There is quite a bit on the internet about this.

I Googled "X-type Jaguar transmission noise" and found quite a bit on the subject. The AWD unit does cause problems much down to operating only in 0.6 litres of lubricant. Perhaps an idea to have a word with a transmission specialist. Simon Park at Bristol Transmissions is very well up on these units. Worth a phone call perhaps?

Ok, thanks Mike.
Internet searching is a bit problematic at the moment as I'm away from home, laptop is (still) in for repair and I am trying to do everything on a little tablet with big fingers!

Poxy Jags!
6 days and it's let me down already.
Battery knackered so wouldn't start this morning.
Slightly miffed phone call to the dealer; 'Oh yeah, come to think of it we had to jump start it the other week'!
Jeeez.
New battery arriving in the morning.

hmm

not really the cars fault , i expect its still on its original , so it has done well,

jut a normal maintenance expense in my opinion , and one that has to be expected and put up with on a ten year old car.....

I totally agree, just not 6 days after I picked it up!
I'm about to leave it in a car park for a week so I would have been well pleased to find a flat battery on Christmas Eve on my way home.
It is the original battery (still has the Jaguar Label on it); I'm a bit miffed with the dealer as they were aware that there was a possible problem as they had to jump start it.
Anyway, hopefully all ok tomorrow.

I agree

however, I never take any PO or garages word for how the car is

so the first thing I do is give the car a once over including battery , lights , fluids and exhaust, and in time a full suspension inspection ,

that way you know if she needs anything urgent for reliability or safety ,

but with a new battery you should now feel better about her for a while, did you get a Jag battery or aftermarket ?

I bought an aftermarket Bosch unit rated at 80Ah with a 4 year warranty so should last a while.
He said hopefully.
