RE Diesel Particulate Filters

Postby trooper » Tue Feb 11, 2014 10:51 pm

Hi all Re Diesel Particulate Filters
I would like to mention that from this month Feb that Diesel Particulate Filters are part of
the MOT test and it is illegal to remove them if they were fitted during manufacture.

I would also like to say something about members talking about trying to squeese more
miles per gallon out of there x.types and i am one them but when i purchased my first x type the garage that services my x type which was a 2.0 L diesel se 2005 model in 2007 told me to
give it a blast along the road to help the internal parts from getting gummed up and hopefully
know major repairs

Hope this gets members to reply

Kind regards
Trooper

Wow, it must be one of those days.

This topic was covered in a presentation to Shropshire WB region last night by the Morris Lubricants technical director.

Many people will know the dpf's have to regenerate regularly; they do this by having a small amount of fuel flow into the dpf which then ignites the unused nasty petrochem products and in theory cleans the dpf.

The best way of doing this is driving at 60 mph for about 20 minutes, or as one wag last night said, would 120 mph for ten minutes be just as good!! Anyway here's the rub.

Modern synthetic oils have to be perfectly matched to your car's engine. Science is complicated but the upshot of what he said was that for modern diesels in particular using the wrong grade of oil will mean you will get a higher than acceptable metallic ash deposit build up in your dpf, which can cause the EMS to put the car into "limp home" mode as the dpf becomes clogged up. Apparently even one litre of the wrong oil will do sufficient damage that you could find the dpf fails within 2-3 months of putting it in.

Bottom line is you don't want to do this because replacing the dpf is v v expensive....so be wise, check out your correct oil grade as recommended by Jaguar and never entertain a cheaper option because it appears to be the same stuff. You can check your correct lubricant via the Morris website using your registration number, as they have linked into the DVLA's database.

He said even some dealer's remain unaware of the need to put the right grade in and many dpf failures under warranty are actually not the manufacturer's responsibility at all but caused by a technician putting in the wrong oil grade.

Re Diesel Particulate Filter
Thanks Ray for your comment
The reason for the DPF article was because of a letter in sat 1Febs Telegraph Motoring .
The writer saying that he had removed the DPF on his Mazda5 2007 model and would he
still need to buy the very expensive low-ash DPF oil ; and have been told that the x type
has some similar oil which is contained up under the Floorpan some members may have
some knowledge if x types have this oil

The presenter from Morris said many people were indeed removing their DPF's, usually because they had already "destroyed" them through putting in the wrong oil. This can be done, but that does not change in any way the engines need for an oil that matches its exact performance criteria, so I would say no - it is just a way of bypassing the problem.

DPFs will very soon be checked visually I think on the MOT, so if it is not there and should be you would get a fail...but I am not sure whether they will check performance...

New regulations now in force as per this link.

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/c ... pf-removal

Not so long ago some motor businesses advertised dpf removal facilities with an electronic retune designed to reduce emissions once the filter had been removed. this latest mod to regulations now means such practice will be illegal.

What would happen if the guts of the dpf filter were removed and the housing then replaced 'empty' or a dummy dpf filter was fitted?

It is not something I am proposing or advocating as my car doesn't have one of them but if the MOT only has a visual inspection......

Its a good question - I suppose the real issue is what would removing the guts (assuming you can do that - anyone ever tried) - do to the emissions out of the exhaust?? Given that the DPF is there to do an important job of filtering out a lot of harmful cr*p then I suspect MOT failure would be a result.

It's a bit extreme though, all you have to do is put the right oil in in the first place, and make sure the car gets a regular run at decent miles to clean out the dpf, surely its more expense and a lot more effort to find ways around it, than doing something that is a fundamental part of routine maintenance? Saving pennies to cost pounds in the long run is probably not worth it....

See my post above.

The company i mentioned were removing DPF internal gubbins then retuning to reduce smoke particulates. They claimed their actions were sufficient to allow a modified car t pass the MOT. Now it is illegal.

Going back to the initial post about the MOT - is it a visual inspection to see that the dpf is physically there or is there actually a functional test - emissions or otherwise?

Here we go again about these filters could i first say to ignore the last two lines in my last article
shows how much i know d p filters
I am only trying to find out what engine oil is needed as i have entered my reg number and it
comes up for a 2005 diesel sport put in x type 2.2 diesel dpf and it comes up blank i have waited
for jaguar to get back in touch looks as if they have better things to do. I have contacted castrol
who were very helpful they supply jaguar or dealerships with castrol edge professional 5w 30
acea c1 jaguar/ford number wss m2c 934 b not the one in the handbook 5w 30 wss m2c 913 b
which is for engines without a diesel particulate filter there are a few oil companies where you
can get the proper oil like shell ;mobil;the one castrol supply is only available from dealerships
in one litre containers and very expensive.Phoned jaguar main dealer who serviced x type three
times and was told the oil they had used was mobil super 3000 fe 5w30 which castrol said is an
oil for engines without a dp filter saying that just put it through mot and the reading for dpf was
0.10 the figure they have is 1.50 i don't know if it goes over that number it would fail.

Kind regards

According to the Morris Lubricants website this is what they recommend ( from their own range of course)....

Application Recommendation Capacity (ltr)
Engine (DT) 1st choice Multivis F 5W-30 - Part No. MFF (a) 6.
2nd choice Multivis 5W-30 - Part No. MSS

You could further check this using your reg no.

Hope this helps, sorry we often get side tracked on the forums when we hit an interesting topic!

There's a franchise which has loads of outlets still offering the removal service.

The guts are removed, the outer casing is replaced and then the software is modified so that it doesn't regenerate. Despite the minister's smug assertion to the contrary on the government website, it's very unlikely that this will be detected at an MoT test.
