New to forum + Question

Postby davidjcr868 » Mon Dec 06, 2021 1:01 pm

I have recently bought my first Jaguar, an X-Type Estate 2.5l petrol manual. I live in the Welsh Marches, the land of potholes.
I did exactly what I would advise people not to do and bought it off the internet. It seems sound; my friendly garage has crawled over it and decided I am either lucky or clever. It just needs some minor suspension work.
I do have one really stupid question. Should there be a spare wheel? There does not seem to be any means of puncture repair. This leaves me puzzled and a bit concerned.

Not sure what age the car is, but may have only been supplied with a puncture repair kit, as per so many new cars now. Useless in my opinion. Bag yourself a space saver spare off ebay, generally plenty to be had. and don't forget a jack and decent wheel brace too :D

Thanks for that. I haven't spotted a puncture repair kit, but from our experience with my wife's VW, they are not the world's best invention. I shall follow your tip.

Hi, I have a 2006 2.5 estate and that model year is supplied with a space saver with a jack and wheel brace stowed under it. The polystyrene tray that fits under the boot floor is sized to work with a narrow space saver set up. However, I obtained a spare alloy wheel and for some time when I was travelling away from home carried that instead of the space saver. The full size wheel fits in the wheel well but the polystyrene tray has to come out. Hope this helps.

A full size spare was an optional extra when we bought our first X type and found it to be a worthwhile investment over the years. Our second X
type had a standard space saver but after one use I couldn't get a full size version quickly enough! Autoreserve, the Jaguar breakers, provided one at a reasonable price, but tyre of unknown internal condition, so I used one of the part-worn wheels from the car as the spare and put new tyres on the punctured wheel and the 'new' wheel. While I was at it I got the wheels re-furbished as well. If you go for a full size alloy, make sure it's an X type size. Some styles of alloys are available with various offsets to suit different Jaguar models and are not interchangeable.

Do the wheels have locking wheel nuts and if so is there a suitable socket for removing them? I got rid of mine and replaced them with standard nuts also from Autoreserve

Quite agree about replacing locking wheelnuts, nobody steals wheels anymore, even up here in Liverpool!
