6k limit for an avatar???

You're having a laugh...

&

Are the 'relevence' (which should surely be relevance??) boxes really any use to people? At least set them to none/all by default - please.

I guess I just hate PhpBBs.

Feeling guilty about possibly being harsh about the previous post, I tried linking the avatar to the gif of the jec logo from the main site which is reported to be 3k.

I then get a warning that max size is 80 x 80 pixels?

Aargh!

Thanks for pointing out the spelling mistake, I think the error exists on all our BBs.

As for the Avatars, what have you in mind?

Both dimensions and physical size.

Regarding the 'Relevance', with little traffic here it may be of questionable use, but with 8 BBs to look after, I try to keep the scripts the same, for maintenance reasons.

I'm sure you understand that were I to set the defaults to 'none/all', then the whole thing would be of no use.

On busier Boards it does have a useful function.

Hmm, I see that there could be some use for sorting things in the distant future as the forum grows, but the forums are separate anyway.

The 'none/all' just saves getting the same error message after every post. I would change it to a significant model if it were relevant. Am I being picky? Sorry if I am.

The avatar settings, to me, would be for dialup use. I went through all the forums I'm a member or mod of yesterday, changing my avatar to one held on Photobucket after losing one of my websites that I used to store gfx. This was the only one that refused the jpg. It's 32kb 87 x 100. It could be made smaller by reducing the number of colours, but not that much. Whereas I remember that 32kb is nearly 10 times the memory size of my first computer, things have moved on a bit.

By the way, after all this complaining & nit picking, please accept my congratulations on a very nice looking set of forums.

Hi Pete

I welcome critical comment, and try to give members something useful.

That said, I do have my own prejudices and one has been large animated avatars. IMHO they are flashy/trashy and care nothing for people on dial-up.

I have increased the image allowance to 32kB and 100 x 100 pixels.

I will ponder further on the 'Relevance' question, but my decision will be tempered by the fact that many members use more than one Forum and they tend to bitch when things are different.

Initially, the 'Relevance' was asked for by one of the larger Forums, to aid searching. The problem was that some people own more than one Jaguar and they tend to put details in their 'signature', which 'confuses' a search for model-specific entries.

OK thanks for that.

I'm not keen on the extravaganzas of animated avatars that some people use either, one that sticks in my mind was the entire light sabre fight from 'The Phantom Menace' - but some are done to great comic effect. None of which apply to a car forum though.

Car details in the signature would be the perfect compromise, though as you point out, specific models for specific forums would have to be enforced - no boasting about your fleet of exotic Jaguars for example.

Although to be fair, you have enough separate forums to make a search for a specific subject easy enough to find anyway - no matter how large the site becomes. Although could I suggest 'Interior' as one to be added as the 2 entries in 'Bodywork' are both actually for interiors! Maybe even 'Modifications' could be another as I know many people like myself who like to make their modern Jaguars stand out from the crowd (hopefully for the right reasons).
