I've seen this one at 3 different dealers now, firstly Arun in West Sussex for 4,995 then in the Midlands for 6,995 then at Kahn for £12,750 and more recent £9875. What do we think one of these in good condition is really worth as I've always liked them. They either seem to be available at well over 100,000 miles for £100s or for below 100,000 miles at £10000+. There appears to be no middle range and none of them ever seem to sell.

Its hard to accurately value any of these, hence why they vary such widely on price.
Many of the best examples of XJ40 have seen huge increases in "asking price" this past two years though.
i haven't seen this one in the flesh (important!), but i would value it at somewhere in the region of £3000- £4500. whether
This is how prices snowball, as people look online to seeing everyone else is asking, and then price theres something close?
another example.

Re: 1992 JAGUAR XJR TWR 4.0 Sport Auto for sale at Dealer
I've seen a Black XJ40 XJR 4.0A with the TWR bodykit and 24,000 miles on it that I'm seriously considering making an offer on. It's immaculate but have not quite convinced the mrs I need another Jag yet. The seller wants £15,000 which I wouldn't even contemplate but wondering what my limit should be? Also, I know of bulkhead rot and crumbling wings and doors but what would you say are the key things to check on these?

Yes, that one has been floating around for years too.I've seen a Black XJ40 XJR 4.0A with the TWR bodykit and 24,000 miles on it that I'm seriously considering making an offer on. clearly its a very good car, and "probably" one of the best condition remaining 40R. but agin not having seen it in the flesh, you can only take it on face value.
at this asking price it should absolutely brand new looking IMO.
you simply have to check everything, especially underneath the car. all bushes, all electrics, all shut lines, paint quality. any signs of overspray. trim fitment. wood veneers, any signs of touch up paint.
and really how well it drives. what might be more tricky is test driving the thing.
i would want a ruddy good test drive before handing over that kind of money, but on winter roads, its hard to imagine the dealer with want to wash it all down and detail it again afterwards.
i might be the odd one out in the JEC, as most people are obsessed with low mileage. But am not a fan of very low mileage cars. You would be too scared to ever use the thing for fear of damaging it, and adding miles, which will hurt the value. Rather a have a good solid car, thats used regularly and is reliable well serviced and cherished. One that you can get in, drive and park where you want. But i suspect i am alone in this view.

Re: 1992 JAGUAR XJR TWR 4.0 Sport Auto for sale at Dealer
You are not alone in that view, Naki.
Very low use and mileage can lead to other "standing car" issues particularly in suspension bush departments where natural runner just denigrates and you find a car which just does not handle or ride well. Other gremlins also often creep in which can further spoil a car.
I had a similar quandary when selecting my X350R recently. Low mileage examples were highly priced and I couldn`t and wouldn`t part with high asking prices despite the low use. Cars well over the 100k mark although undoubtedly the subject of some suspension rework became difficult to quantify given both price and mileage.
A mid mileage car at around 77k was eventually selected for a reasonable sum with excellent body and interior but in need of suspension overhaul. I was comfortable with that as it meant I started with a pristine car for good money and knew that the suspension issues were something I would eventually have to do on either low mileage, high priced cars or high mileage, high priced cars (relative to having no doubt a need for suspension work).
So I bought at middle mileage and price range knowing I was going to have to build a new suspension. That seemed the sensible way to go, so thats what I did. In the process, I gained a known condition, upgraded suspension that would give bullet prof service for many more years and a car that then offered sound high grade motoring at a value for money level. All done to my spec with components that would be longer lifed than aged OE parts. in addition I also had the gearbox serviced with new filer and oil, the diff oil and air suspension recalibrated. I am now well ahead in condition when compared to even an extremely low mileage example. even though I`ve probably spent another £3k on top of the purchase price. This was spent on new parts which helps place my car towards the top of a selling ladder and gives me a really good car..
