There are usually fobs available on eBay complete at a reasonable price but be aware there are two types on differing frequencies. The fob will then have to be programmed to your car. Most main dealers have dumped this kit (never use it nowadays) though some still have it stashed away in a dusty cupboard. I would guess that the Jag specialists may be the best place to seek help nowadays?
From memory the early ones are square ish and work in the 3--band, the later ones are more oblong and work on 415khz.
If you need further info post back and I'll look up my notes.
Having said that I know someone who will have this info on the tip of his tongue........Rob?

300 fobs are round with two buttons, the backs fall off and get lost, and the buttons wear out, new buttons are available but the backs are not, two frequencies, but most of the ebay ones are to the UK spec any way

Tony, the fobs you are thinking of are the one button XJ40 style, again two different frequencies, beware here though, the new ones that are left and on ebay are european spec and wil not work on UK cars

As I say I have programming instructions here for all XJ40, XJS, X300 , XK8 and X308, works 95% of the time, I have two 40's here I cannot get to go into learning mode for some reason though

Thanks Rob....

These things are never strightforward are they and you can't assume that different models from the same era share the same technology.......

See you at Weston Park?

Best
