Looking for an XJ40 Daimler (if thats the correct phrase)

Postby ianwilson » Sun Nov 08, 2020 1:57 pm

Good afternoon folks,

I may find myself in the arena for an XJ40 Daimler, I'm not sure if this is the correct item but I'll describe what I would like.

Its the one with the rectangular headlamps, not round ones and must be in Daimler spec.

I'm open to whys and why nots with the engine size, options etc but must have the following :

Daimler - Not Jaguar.
Metallic Red or Blue.
Auto Transmission.
Air Con
Cruise
Leather
No Rust
Service history
Lattice Alloy Wheels
All electrical items must be working.

If anyone has one of these, don't care where you are in the UK, I'll come and look.

Many thanks

Ian

Hi Ian, I have been asked by a local family to help them find a new home for a 'special' XJ40. I have not seen it in the metal yet, visiting this coming Wednesday and will get some high resolution photos of the car at that point and check out all of the car. It is a 4.0 engined version from 1990. Current MoT runs to February 2021.

I do know that it has been recently restored with a full respray in metallic light blue and it is fitted, from new, with the TWR body kit (and potentially other TWR bits that are so far unknown). There is no reported rust, any minor spots having been removed at the recent (in the last year) restoration. Only issue is it is not a Daimler version, but it is a Sovereign, version, meaning it has the correct (rectangular) headlamps you want, Jaguar Sport badges and the special Speedline wheels plus the full high spec that goes with the Sovereign spec. It also has the factory fitted electric sunroof.

If you want to email me a contact for yourself, I can open an email chat with you and show you some low resolution photos that I already have.

Rather than put my email address on the Forum, you will find it in the JE Magazine - look in the Modern XK column for me. Or you can try the PM approach through the Forum here. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Ian, no problem. Good luck with your search but I suspect that the Sovereign and Daimler models are one and the same in the XJ40 sense.

Hi Ian,

Probably best to keep an eye on eBay, Car & Classic, Auto Trader. You have narrowed your options hugely with some of your must haves. Luckily most 40's are a variant of Red or Blue, and all Daimler come with Leather, Air Con and Cruise, but no rust will never be a guarantee unless you happen to find one which has had a very recent full strip to shell and rebuild, and Lattice alloys were not standard on Daimler unless it came with the Sport Pack (or someone has added them and happy to include), which very few did. Only 1 in 10 XJ40's survive from the 208,733 built, so keep an open mind, selection isn't plentiful. Most people who have the sought after Lattice 16's remove them prior to sale as they can fetch up to £1,500.00 on their own depending on condition (far more valuable than a lot of the cars), Lattice 15's are much more common and you may find those already fitted as they are not as valuable. Standard and common styles for Daimler XJ40 will be the Teardrop Metric (closed wheel nut) on early cars, Roulette on mid life 40's and either Radials or Aero on late Daimler. Of the 102,000 cars I have on the Register, there are only 7 cars which fit your requirements which are known to be alive in the Uk, none of them I can vouch for no rust, they will always be rotting somewhere behind a panel and there are many places on these water can sit without ever being discovered until a panel comes off. There is one which is for sale on Car & Classic, a Daimler Double Six down in Ramsgate, but is Kingfisher Blue, so more of a Green with a hint of Blue, so may have to compromise there, it does have Lattice 16 alloys, its on French number plates but was originally registered as L804 HKL, its on for £10,000 and its unlikely it will go for much cheaper as it is a DD6 and the seller was always firm on what he wanted for it and is happy to sit on it from the last bit of intel I got from someone who viewed it, and again, never a guarantee the car wont have any corrosion.

Good Luck!

That is a fair point Jim. Nothing too drastic separates the Sovereign and Daimler. Rear individual seats, rear picnic tables, fluted chrome, chrome line on each side of the car, sheep skin rugs (if they havent been wrecked in the 26-34 years of use) and heated front seats. And of course, the name change. Nothing else really. Daimler wasn't as fully kitted out a spec as people believe on XJ40 like the later cars were, you still had to pay extra for things such as 6 disc autochanger, seat piping, memory seats, limited slip diff, Autolux Leather, heated front windscreen (later cars), just to name a few, all were options option's and can never be taken as a given.

Car 651501, Kingfisher with Magnolia/Isis Blue, Roulette alloys, last registered as J1 VKL (which the DVLA still has it assigned as), prior to that was J155 CNO and REG 102. Last seen by a Register supporter on 25/01/2020 on the M25 near Kent. Listed as a Long Wheel Base on the ad, this is wrong, it isn't a LWB Majestic, its a Standard SWB. Not Doeskin either, and a digit missing on the VIN. Blanked out number plate so you cant look it up - very poor ad, but I've provided the details above from my records so should be enough for anyone interested to do further checking.

This is the same car as previously pointed at by Paul in his post above, just being 'pushed' by a different html site. Comments from XJ40 register then similarly apply.

Not a LWB. Very important point. Ads like this drive me demented, as someone comes along and buys it thinking its something its not, find out from someone like me what it is, kicks off and feels cheated by both the seller and me for telling them. Happened too many times. Had this exact problem around a year ago, German buys a car unseen and imports it to Germany thinking its a LWB Majestic, speaks to me, I tell him the truth, he kicks off at me big style. Sellers need to know what they are selling, buyers need to know what they are buying. This ad is a case of someone doing a job they shouldn't be. No quality control, no knowledge on the product they are selling, not good! I have sent an e-mail to the company asking them to amend their ad and explained fully why its not a Majestic.

Hi all,

Many thanks for your messages with this enquiry, and I'm truly amazed at the efficiency of the people on here that really know their stuff!

You guys are terrific.

I'm in no rush for this potential purchase but if anyone knows of someone that wishes to dispose of their cherished vehicle in the form that I have described then would you be so kind as to leave a message on this post for me.

Thanks again to everyone that has replied.
