x300 over heating ,but temperture gauge remains at normal,
i under stand that it is possible to have cooling fans running at low speed, using a bridging plug is this possible

mikenham,

this might sound a silly question but how do you know that the car is over-heating if the gauge is still reading normal?

Does the temp gauge start from cold and then go up to normal, or is it stuck? If former then I would agree with previous comment, how do you know it's overheating?

Towing a caravan to the jec caravan rally, oil warning light came on and lost oil pressure on the gauge, car was very hot.
I let every thing cool down, all seemed ok,
on the return journey home ,bottom hose came off, i supected pressure in the cooling system

I am guessing you may have an air lock after refilling? Or possibly cylinder head gasket leaking, are you still having to frequently top up water?

Clogged radiator or water pump with impeller slipping on the shaft?

I agree, sounds like water not flowing around the system, either water pump faulty or some blockage. A trip to an independent garage the best I would say.

stat stuck shut, hot water one side, cooler the other side, gauge is reading the cooler side

from memory only early 300 XJR had the fans running on a permenant basis, I then think there was a service update to switch them off if the owner wanted, I know my October 94 R ran the fans all the time, my main dealer did the upgrade to switch them off circa 1999 when i bought the car, all my later 300's do not have constant running fans, there is no need even with the extra load when towing

I changed a stat recently, but mine was opening early rather than not at all. Didn't take too long.

The temperature gauge is very non-linear so it might be worth getting a OBD-II scan gauge to read the actual temperature. I presume the X300 isn't like the Rover 45 diesel which has two temp senders - one for the dash and another for the ECU.

Out of interest, is it easy to revert the fans to automatic operation? They're quite noisy if you're just poking around under the bonnet.
