Low coolant level warning

Hi all,

Yesterday on my drive home from work, my coolant level
warning light came on. After that I watched the temperature gauge
like a hawk but it didn't move at all. So it didn' t bother me too
much.
Since the coolant had been topped up about 2 months ago I first thought
there might be a problem with the coolant level gauge.
When I got home, I checked the level and it was indeed low. The
coolant level indication was therefore working correctly and I
therefore looked for signs of leaking, but found nothing. (I
checked about every hour for a leak, while the engine was cooling
down.)
I did notice however that my rear bumper was quite dirty around the
exhaust pipes. As it was a nice and sunny day and I had only driven
on clean highway roads this surprised me. I cleaned it off and
noticed that on the rear bumper was a spray of tiny whitish spots.

Anyone know if this is connected to the low coolant level? I got
the impression that exhaust might have been ''wet'' and that the
small droplets might have ''dried'' on the rear bumper?
