Window winder

Hi l'm trying to extract the window winder mechanism from the door of an XK150 dhc.
All the door card has been removed, the nuts (2 in No) that secure both the winder mechanism and the frame of the unit (4 nuts). I am unable to get the unit in far enough to clear the structure of the door, so unable to slide the unit out.
Is there a position that the glass should be in. Or due to the winder itself protruding through the door structure into the car stopping the unit from going into the door space behind, or, is the winder unit collapseable from the front, thus allowing the unit to go into the space between the back of the door and the glass.
Your observations would be appreciated.
