XJ40/X300 front coil spring compatibility?

Hi all. I'm in need of a matched set of front coil springs. My local breakers have a couple of AJ6 XJ40's in their yard with what appear to be half decent looking springs for £20 each. Are they going to be compatible with a 1997 Sovereign? There's also a later X308 in the yard - a newer car and better looking springs - but again, are they compatible? Any thoughts and insights much appreciated!
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
I believe that the XJ40 and X300 front suspension are the same. I know the XJ8 (x308) is certainly not the same, it was re designed to accommodate bigger wheels, new suspension set up etc...
Mr RobV12 will provide the complete answer I imagine.

40 and 300 springs will swap, but make sure the set you are purchasing are a matched pair, and are the correct rates for your car, all sorts of odd things get put on old cars to get them through an mot, check Classic Parts website for compatability and part nos
be aware when changing them, use the correct Jaguar approved tool only, these are dangerous items

As Rob says, the correct Jaguar tool is a must when it comes to springs. As a member of the club you can hire items like this from our tools and spares.

Hi,
A few pics of the right tool in use (guide pins not in yet). I decided to change the front shockers and springs after a big improvement following changing the rear. What astonished me was the state of the front springs when removed, and only 2 months since MOT.
I have 40 years working on cars and strongly advise using the tool. I bought mine from Bosch tools.£140.
