I think we've narrowed down the 'clunk' noise from the front offside to something inside the damper. If you put a finger on the casing while someone pushes the corner down, you can feel the clunk in the first portion of the travel. You can't feel anything on the other side.
I presume it's best to change a pair and, as I've got odd ones on the rear I'm inclined to change all four.
Can I get them out without compressing the springs and where's a good (I mean cheap) place to pick them up?
It's got sport suspension - I presume that means the dampers differ to the standard touring set-up.
Edit: Genuine ones seem to be around £150-£160 each, with Koni ones at around £110. Ouch.

Re: Clunk
front damper swap is easy, 30 mins a side max, jack up, remove wheel, support lower wishbone with another jack, remove top mount inside engine bay, usually a 15 0r 17 mm nut, remove lower bolt and nut 16 and 18 mm from memory, withdraw bolt, lowere support jack to a point wher you can compress the damper slide to the rear and drop it down and out, replacement is the opposite!!
rears on a 300 are also easy, I use a dodge to miss out the spring compressors, jack up, remove wheel, spport the A frame, undo the lower shock bolt, remove the A frame bush securing bolt, lower the support jack, this will decompress the spring, it cant go anywhere as the shock is still holding it in place, undo the four 13mm bolts holding the top pan and withdraw spring and damper unit, there is JUST enough room with a bit of persuassion, again assembly is the opposite, allow an hour a side
Sport dampers are a little firmer, try SNG Barratts, Classic Parts, or NE Jag Spares all should have them in stock
I use the German Spec ones on my XJR, cheaper, better ride and available through Classic parts
