Which one to buy?

Postby maxbozon » Sun Sep 01, 2013 3:49 pm

Hi!

Steering pump in my x300 has started to leak, so I am looking for a new one to replace it. However there seems to be a range of different ones that would fit. I need some advice which one to buy.

So here are my options:

Exchange part (does it mean reconditioned?): http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/part/MNA8110ABE £285+VAT

David Manners has two different exchange parts, with different prices and weights:
http://www.jagspares.co.uk/Manners/part ... MNA8110ABE £335+VAT
http://www.jagspares.co.uk/Manners/part ... MNA8110ABE* (exchange replacement part) £305+VAT
and finally some replacement part (also 3kg heavier than the others):
http://www.jagspares.co.uk/Manners/part ... =MNA8110AB* £395+VAT

I am a bit lost which one to choose... My understanding is that reconditioned parts can be a bit tricky especially for power steering.

I will appreciate any piece of advice.

Thanks

Max

Exchange parts usually mean they want your old one in exchange, which I imagine they would refurbish and sell to a future customer.

David Manners marks non-genuine parts with symbols after the part number.
Notice - part numbers ending # are original equipment parts and parts ending in * are replacement parts
So # is just like Jaguar fitted but not in a Jaguar box and * is something made by someone else as a substitute for the original. It wouldn't be the first time I saw Jaguar Classic Parts offer parts cheaper than elsewhere, although just because Jaguar are selling it doesn't mean it's necessarily a Jaguar part. This far after from manufacture, sometimes you get substitutes (* parts in David Manners' parlance).

Max,

Jaguar Classic Parts are the division that sell Genuine Jaguar Parts for the older vehicles. Under the terms of the contract with Jaguar Cars Ltd, parts must conform to the Jaguar specification, quality and tolerances. So even if a part is being made now rather than old original stock, it is a genuine Jaguar part, made by the original Jaguar supplier or by a new Jaguar supplier but in accordance with the original drawings, specifications etc.

When independents such as Manners, Barratts etc sell OEM parts, they are purchasing them from Jaguar Classic Parts and effectively just acting as a Jaguar dealer but with their own markup etc. This is why I suggest that you always consider purchasing through your Jaguar Dealer or direct from Jaguar Classic Parts. My own experience is that when I purchase from my Dealer I would typically get a 20% discount. I do not have that experience with the independents.

Jaguar Classic Parts are not allowed to procure and sell non-original parts. But Independents can obviously choose to procure any aftermarket, replacement alternatives that they want. Where original part are not available, that is sometimes the only choice. If an original part is available through Jaguar Classic Parts, then it's naturally your choice as to whether you go down the original or "replacement" part route.

Jaguar Classic Parts sometimes sell major drivetrain items such as engines, gearboxes etc on an exchange basis in order to acquire the original blocks, casings etc which can be used for the build of further items. As you have seen from the website, these are marked appropriately. If you contact Glenn Parkes at Jaguar Classic Parts, he can advise you whether that particular rack has been built up from an exchange unit or whether it is absolutely brand new. My purely personal view is that an exchange rack from Jaguar would be absolutely fine either way. As I said, just my view.

I hope that helps
