Steering Column Motors

Hi there,

Im new to owning and working on Jaguars so I have a couple of questions about the motor in my steering wheel column. If anyone has any answers I would be gratefull to hear them before I take it to pieces.

I have a 1996 4.0 Sov and the electric steering wheel adjust switch doesnt work. If I push the switch back and forth I can hear a whirring noise that sounds like a motor but the wheel doesnt move. When I push the switch up or down it just makes a clicking sound.

What I would like to know is, how many motors are in there? Is it one motor that moves it up, down, back and forth? If so would I just need to replace the cable? Or does it have two motors? One for up and down, and another for back and forth? If so do I just need to replace the one for up and down? I have searched for a 2nd hand up & down motor and cant find one which makes me think there may only be one.

Also when I set the memory seats it never leaves the seat all the way back. When I sit in the seat I always have to move it back 1". Another issue is the electric front passenger mirror moves to face the sky once I start to reverse and I have to move it down once I start moving forward. Will this problem be connected with the column issue?

I know this is a lot of questions for a first post but its really effecting my enjoyment of the car as I am quite tall and struggle to get in and out with the wheel be so low.

looking at the parts list

you will need JLM 20194 , steering coloumn motor tilt kit at a hefty £148.04 and the steering column reach repair kit at an even more hefty £245.64 part number JLM 12187

a known to be good secondhand unit would be a cheaper alternative

the memeory failure sounds like an ECU fault, first I would get the car scanned for any faults or you could try a hard dump of all the memories, disconnect the battery, ENSURE THE KEYS ARE OUT OFF THE CAR, do not close the boot if your boot lock will not work on the key. Leave for 30 minutes or so, connect back up, the car may lock itself hence my warning above, input radio code, reset all memories and see where you go from there

there is a known weak point in the adjustment of the steering column,

the gear strip that the motor drives in only nylon , and strips preventing the reach facility from working


these are available, mostly in the USA , but also in the UK

around £20 each they aint cheap, but are way cheaper than a new motor assembly , and more reliable than a ' used ' unit that may only be one operation away from doing the same thing , replacement is a bit fiddly , but quite easy for the DIY mechanic ,

Thanks for the info BB. I have ordered the kit and am looking forward to fitting it. At least I will be able to move it back and forth. I will wait to try and find a second hand motor for the up and down movement. Do you know if there is a way to manually adjust the reach and height as a tempory measure?
