Wheel Bearings

Postby Church1 » Tue Dec 19, 2017 10:35 pm

Hello, My 1995 X300 has been diagnosed with 'slightly' worn wheel bearings. Can these be adjusted in any way?, or is replacement the only option. Thankyou. Graham Matthews

Hi Graham

You could try 'nipping' the bearings up a little. Lift the car, and put a hand above and below on the tyre. Just rock in and out to feel for the play. (it's a gentle movement) Spin the wheel and listen for any graunching. If there's excessive sound then the bearings are goosed. Pop the wheel off, then tap the hub cover off. You'll be faced with a large-ish nut on the hub shaft. It will have a split-pin and a wee metal cover with slots, remove both. (probably about now it would be the time you realise you don't have any new split-pins) Anyway, just get the right size socket and carefully nip the bearing up, DON'T use hardly any force! You can put the wee cover and split-pin back in place now. Wheel back on, and check as you did in the first place. The wheel should still spin freely, and there should be no sounds from the bearings. More comprehensively, you would take the brakes off, remove the hub from the stub-axle and then check the bearings running against the cups, then re-pack with grease, and re-fit. Even after doing this you would re-check the bearings after a few hundred miles and re-adjust.
