x300 gearbox

Postby richard1066 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 1:44 pm

From time to time, and for no apparent reason, my car goes into limp home mode. The only consisitent is that I bring the car to a halt then as I pull away the limp home light comes on. It doesn't happen all the time and sometimes the engine is cold sometimes the engine is warm i.e. after 3hours on the move. The cure seem to be turn of the ignition and restart. I've had the ecu removed and had electric connections checked and am told they are all ok. Please give me some clues before I go mad!!

have you solved this yet??

I reckon it could be the connection underneath the car, the multipin connector from the car loom to the gearbox gets dirty and corrodes, whip it of check it, clean it , put it back and see how you go

You may need to disconnect the battery for half an hour to dump the fault code from the cars memory

Remember if you do this, have your key in your hand, note the radio cose, and DO NOT shut the boot

I've stated getting this on my XJR6. I've cleaned the connector underneath but to no avail sadly... Its accompanied by some really poor gear changes just beforehand, so rapidly coming to the conclusion there might actually be something genuine wrong with it. Anyone know how long XJR6 ato gearboxes last? 130K miles seems a bit disappointing to me if it is going wrong...

130k is nothing for one of these boxes, try a fuild and filter change, cheap and easy, may just help

I may be talking out of my trumpet here and I`m not at all conversant with your model of Jag, but might I tentatively suggest a good sludge clean out of the throttle body, airflow meter and MAF sensor.

They do sludge up on most EFI cars and a good clean with carb cleaner, rag and best tooth brush can be benificial to stopping limp home modes and cut outs.pay particular attention to the throttle plate to throttle bore closures. Get that area really clean but don`t damage the coating on the bore.

Use only spray cleaner on the MAF sensor. The heated wires don`t like anything else up `em. Go easy on that part of the job.

I now do this job each year on my car. Saves the sludge buld up and helps with slow speed smoothness and even tick over.

I see Jenner Jnr is back from the beer festival and not working today as a result. Sorry I couldn`t make it.

Mike
