Manual X300 and XJ40

Postby ChrisXJS » Sat Aug 18, 2012 9:04 am

I just thought I would pop this on the bulletin board to help out at least 2 of you with manual cars that I know of. I am grateful to Ken at Normans Motors in Mill Lane NW6 London who put me onto a company who overhaul hydraulic cylinders and as the slave on my manual x300 gave up the ghost and I wasn't going to pay circa £150 for a new one I have given them a go. The cost £48 including VAT and for that they machine hone the bore and insert a stainless steel liner with new rubbers, nipple etc and degrease and paint the unit. The owner Nigel was as helpful as could be and now I have a shiny slave cylinder which I am going to fit this weekend.

They also do brake cylinders and a number of other hydraulic parts so if no one else can help you give them a go.

The company are Past Parts and they are based in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. You can find them on www.pastparts.co.uk

Good luck all manual car owners.

likely to be a rear ABS sensor failing or failed, try a battery disconnect and reconnect, I have also found a few good stamps on the stop pedal has cured mine in the past, I have had the same issue for four years on my XJR it comes and goes, one day I WILL treat it to a new one!!

if still no joy, try Neville at NE Jag Spares 0191 586 7770 he will have plenty of goos used ones at circa 20 quid plus vat plus post

I had an ABS warning light coming and going on my X300. I tried re-wiring my broken wheel hub grounding straps but that didn't help. In the end a wiggle of the ABS control unit plug helped. I think I read somewhere the solder connections for the plug crack inside the control unit.

I suppose there's also a chance a wiggle might kill it permanently, but at least you'll know what needs fixing.

Same issue as on a V6/8 modern S-type throttle body TAC plug and socket module connection. The joints can fracture inside the often sealed module control box. The only option is frequently to replace the module unit. Unfortunately with the S-type throttle TAC unit, it is harmonised to the throttle motor at production stage and one ends up replacing the complete throttle body.

However, it is always worth attempting to open plastic box modules to see if it is possible to re- solder any broken connections. Nothing to loose really if the unit has a problem.

Adding to Chris's post about Past Parts and refurbishment of clutch cylinders I have recently (March 2019) had a good experience of Past Parts and would recommend them to manual gearbox owners with clutch cylinder problems.
