Good evening all 1st time poster here after joining the club.
I have acquired a 1997 Jaguar Sovereign 4.0 (X300) it has stood a few months and has no service history. I intend to start with a blank canvas and start servicing it from front to rear, my question is this.. what grade of engine oil do I need to use & how much of it do I need o buy? it has a genuine 62k on the clock. what grade & colour gearbox oil do I need to use for the automatic gearbox & again how much of it? and lastly what grade of diff oil do I need & how much?
Thanks, Keith

Keith,
Just my suggestion. Others may have different views.
Engine oil - 7-8 litres 10w40 good semi-synthetic
Autobox - Dexron III - If you just drain via sump plug, you'll only get about 2.5 litres out of a total of approx. 9 litres. Lots of oil remains in torque converter, oil cooler and oil cooler pipes. A simple way is to drain, refill, drive 10 miles, drain, refill, drive 10 miles etc. I did 3 changes like that, then dropped the sump to replace the filter, then 2 more changes. In that way, most of the dirty oil had eventually been replaced.
Rear diff - Castrol 75w140 with LSD additive.
Good luck
Paul

Re: Service questions Oil's
I concur with all previously said. I would also add, get a bespoke ignition advance and use 'high-octane' fuel, the extra price of the fuel is well worth for the better mpg, and the better response. The ignition advance added between 25 and 30 bhp to my 3.2, mind you, I had the cylinder head off mine to inspect and grind the valves, and 'gas-flowed' the head at the same time. On my 'ex-works' rolling-road, once re-assembled and run for some miles, mine was doing just over 240bhp with 112k on the clock. You can get the ignition-advance from the club somewhere. Also, I only use 'Shell' fuel on all my old cars and use a proper 'local' type 'Shell' garage that puts in 'Shell's' recommended additives. Mainly because 'Shell' fuels have less ethanol at the moment (and mostly always have done) less ethanol is better for older engines.
