fuel fail 24

Anyone know how to rectify a (very) intermittent Fuel Fail 24 error (it's happened twice in 4 months of mostly daily use)? Allegedly it's the ignition amplifier module but the car has never had any problems starting and although the "check engine" light comes on. Turning the engine off and then on again seems to remove the light, and the car seems to be running mostly fine with no noticeable loss of power. I'm thinking corroded wire or contact. The fuel gauge and temp gauge also seem to be overoptimistic (reading full occasionally when I have a quarter of tank used) and not reading normal temp even after 40 mins on the motorway. Maybe dodgy ECU?

Re: fuel fail 24
first, get rid of the stored codes, unhook the battery, ensure you have the keys OUT of the car and do not shut the boot , go away and have a cuppa, come back and hook up battery, this is when a 40 may lock itself, hence the keys out of the car, input radio code, car will have had a reset so all memories will have been lost
test drive and see if the fault comes back
fuel and temp gauges could be related with a dodgy dash pack, but more likely is a faulty water temp sender or stuck open thermostat, and for the fuel it will be the sender getting old, 40 gauges were not that accurate any way, I have just drained a tank today, best part of 6 gallons came out, but the gauge was showing less than a quarter
finally it is best not to run late 40's with low fuel, the pump gets hot with no fuel around it to cool it, this will lead to premature failure, it will fail anyway at circa 120K miles, you have that to look forward to!
