Potential new owner...

Hi all,

A friend of mine (who borrowed my XJ40 for a year) is now looking to buy a Jag saloon for every-day use and I wondered what advice you may have. If it were me I'd just buy the latest, lowest mileage Daimler 4.0 XJ40 I could, but he's after something a bit more modern, reasonably economical, which doesn't rust too badly (he has no garage), and something that doesn't require as much tinkering as my (rather knackered) '40.

I've been looking at 3.2L X300s but also the x308s on his behalf but wondered if there are any pitfalls or recurring problems that need to be spotted in 2nd hand examples. Servicing and maintenance are not too much of an issue as he's realistic about these costs, but sadly a V-12 is out of the question.

The budget is up to about 5K - what would you buy if you were in his shoes?

This weekend I helped him pick up a 1994 Daimler XJ40 with one previous owner, FJSH and 88k on the clock. Hopefully £2K was a fair price, it's certainly a whole lot of car for the money!
