Head Lights

Hi everyone. I am a a new member and seem to be having a problem with my dipped headlights insofar as their performance is pitiful. I have changed both bulbs recently and whilst they appear bright enough when you look at them from outside the car, their performance from within is really poor. I do not remember them being this bad before and am at a loss to know why they are now so bad. Anybody else suffering out there?

I don't think your alone... I have owned my XJ for just over two years now and thought much the same as you when I first had it... I even went as far as bying some of the 'blue' bulbs which adverts profess increase the light output with 'whiter' light... net result from some very expensive bulbs was that I personally felt they were then worse than the output from the original bulbs, yes the light was less yellow and more white, but the illumination was no better in fact I felt in the dark narrow lanes near home they were in fact less efficient than standard bulbs in lighting up the roadway ahead... I put up with them for about two months in the dead of winter and replaced them with new standard bulbs... I have not revisited this since chosing to accept them for what they are!!

thus I too would be interested to know if anything reasonably priced can make the situation better...

I am a new member to this forum and just noticed this post. I have recently acquired a 1994 XJ40 and have also noticed that the headlights are almost useless unless they are on full beam, which doesn't make me popular with other road users!

Are there any bulbs on the market that might significantly improve the brightness of the dipped headlights, or am I doomed to forever driving around with full beams and front fogs on just to avoid crashing?

There are a lot of replacement bulbs which give improved light output. Have a look at this thread on the X308 Forum, which should give some food for thought. I can personally vouch for the improvements of the Philips X-treme bulbs.

Hi all, yepp, I know this problem only to well!
I have recently changed the bulbs in my X300 for a full set of Osram Nightbreakers, and what a difference they have made!

Main beam is now like daylight! they are that bright, I think they claim an improvement on the originals of about 90%.

I got mine through ebay, and for the full set of four H1's I paid £27 inc postage!!! Bargin!

on all 40's check the condition of the headlight reflector too, quad lamps rot from the rear and cause lack og forward light, on the Sov style lights the reflective caoting degrades and give the same feeble light output

300's the headlight glass can become cloudy

Has anyone information on fitting HIDS to an XJ6? The present light output on mine is pitiful, and we are plagued with deer on the roads. Worse, they have learned now not to look up as you approach. True!! Previously you could pick up their eyes reflecting the light, as in cats eyes, but not now. Our Jaguar dealer won't comment on them - "they are not Jaguar approved parts" - and I've heard they can affect the EMC if not installed properly.
